This paper examines the effect of pre-adolescent parental support,  monitoring, and coercive control on the timing of adolescents' dating and first sexual encounter.  The effect of adolescent race, gender, family structure and socioeconomic background on the relationship between parenting strategies and sexual initiation is also discussed.
