This paper discusses the relationship between low socio-economic status and participation in sexual activities that increase the risk of pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted disease among young adults in South Africa. It demonstrates that poor youths are more likely to engage in prostitution, be coerced into having sex, have multiple sexual partners, get pregnant, and have sex at a young age. They are also less likely to be abstinent, practice safe sex, or have a close relationship with their partner.
