This article discusses factors that affect the likelihood that teens will use contraception during their first sexual encounter.  It found that age of first encounter, length of relationship, and communication about contraception were associated with consistent contraceptive use.  Teens who had an older partner, had taken a virginity pledge, had a partner known by their friends, or had a relationship with little committment, were less likely to use contraception.
