This paper compares rates of adolescent and young adult mortality across thirty countries over four decades, focusing specifically on death caused by motor vehicle accidents, suicide, HIV infection and homicide.  It demonstrates that the United States has consistently had exceptionally high rates of accidental, but behaviour-related deaths.  The author calls for further study of the factors that contribute to this culture of risk-taking among American youths.
