This study examines the effectiveness of generous family policies for promoting childbearing in Norway.  It suggests that such policies are very beneficial, as evidenced by relatively high rates of fertility in that country despite high rates of female employment.  At the same time, the author suggests that such policies alone are not sufficient to sustain fertility, as couples' childbearing decisions are still significantly affected by economic conditions and unemployment rates.
