This paper demonstrates that maternal employment has a significant negative effect on children's early verbal skills, but not on their math skills.  It also finds that family income and the type of child care arrangements are important mediators of these effects, and that early maternal employment has a stronger negative effect on higher-income children than on lower-income ones.  The role that the government can play in terms of parental leave and the provision of quality child care is also discussed.
