This article examines policies relating to parental leave, child care, and child benefits in a variety of industrialized western countries.  It finds that the United States stands alone in its policies relating to these issues and recommends that it adopt some of the more generous and comprehensive policies of the other nations, such as paid parental leave and child care subsidies.
