This essay argues the state should support marriage and lays out the reasons why: improved child outcomes, improved economic and emotional outcomes for parents among them. The author addresses, and opposes the argument that marriage is personal and private, and therefore government should play no role in the institution whatsoever and suggests policy initiatives to strengthen marriages including divorce law reform, economic incentives for marriage and marriage and family promotional campaigns.
