This article examines the reasons which lead women and men to decide not to marry the other parent of their child.   Reasons include the increasing acceptability of cohabitation, societal disapproval of young marriage, and the cultural perception of marriage as an expression of love rather than as a social institution.  The author also makes suggestions for promoting marriage and reducing rates of unwed motherhood.
