This paper addresses the occurrence of fatherhood and looks specifically at the characteristics of young and/or absentee fathers. Its findings indicate that fathers who live apart from their children have more social and psychological problems relating to their upbringing than those who live with their children. The authors suggest that some absentee fathers may lack the skills, health, and well-being necessary to be successful caretakers and providers.
