This paper explores the relationship between employment and mental health, and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of the Self Sufficiency Project in terms of its policy of providing financial incentives for employment to those living on welfare. The findings suggest that full time employment, or even the probability of employment, decreases the likelihood of emotional and mental health problems, and that the Self Sufficiency Project helps to reduce the number of cases of long-term mental health problems in a cost-effective manner.
