This article assesses the quality of counselling received by mothers who participate in a program to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV and AIDS in South Africa.  It concludes that overall quality of counselling is poor and that important information is not communicated properly, thus significantly reducing the chances of program effectiveness.
