Predicting Maternal Behaviors During Pregnancy: Does Intention Status Matter?

This study found that women who had a planned pregnancy were more likely to seek out early prenatal care and to stop smoking than women with unplanned pregnancies.  However, they were not more likely to reduce alcohol consumption, visit the doctor regularly for prenatal care, or follow their doctors advice about a healthy pregnancy.  The authors conclude that these factors have more to do with a woman's social and demographic characteristics than with the intendedness of the pregnancy.
