This report examines the characteristics of children living in kinship care arrangements and describes recent trends in the use of this type of care in the United States.  It distinguishes between formal kinship care, in which children are looked after by relatives under the supervision of the state, and informal care, which includes all other forms of relative caregiving in the absence of a parent.
