This study looked at the impact of early parental employment, particularly maternal employment, on children's developmental outcomes and found that the effects were quite small.  It suggested that in some instances it had a slightly negative effect but that in other cases, especially with respect to single mothers and low income families, maternal employment benefited children by increasing family income.
