This paper discusses the benefits and drawbacks of shared placement and sole custody arrangements after divorce.  It finds that, although sole custody usually brings greater stability and fewer returns to court, children in shared placement arrangements are more likely to maintain quality relationships with their fathers and to have regular contact with them.
