This study asked fathers what they perceived to be their most important parental role: financial support, direct care, love and affection, protection, discipline, or teaching life lessons.  It found that most fathers believed that providing love and affection was most important, although cohabiting fathers were more likely than married fathers to believe that their most important role was providing financial support.
