This essay discusses how current cultural trends affecting fatherhood will continue to influence future child rearing. The authors identify four significant socio-cultural shifts including increased labour force participation among women, the absence of non-residential fathers, increased father involvement in intact families and increased cultural diversity in the United States. The authors conclude that shifting parental roles will influence the expectations of future generations concerning parenting behaviours.
