This paper discusses some of the potentially negative consequences of corporal punishment and demonstrates that a positive correlation exists between family size and the frequency and duration of corporal punishment use.  It suggests that the stress of having a large family may lead parents to adopt these parenting behaviours.  It also hypothesizes that declining fertility and family size has contributed to a reduction in corporal punishment.
