This paper examines the relative bargaining power of women in married and cohabiting relationships in states with more stringent enforcement of child support payment.  Its findings suggest that stricter enforcement gives greater power to married women, since it makes divorce a more feasible option, but that it may reduce the bargaining power of cohabiting women, resulting in increased hardship and anxiety.
