This paper examines the consequences of increasing levels of cohabitation, as opposed to marriage, as the basis for starting a family.  It finds that cohabiting couples are more likely to separate and that they have different ways of dealing with custody and child support issues.  In particular, children of these relationships are more likely to have little or no contact with their father after the parental relationship ends.
