This brief examines the growing rate of births to unmarried women in the United States, particularly among women in cohabitating relationships. Noting higher rates of union dissolution among cohabiting couples and potentially negative consequences for children of unwed parents, the brief discusses several implications for public policy, including support to help cohabitating couples who would like to marry.
