This paper examines the relationship between child support and welfare receipt, with a particular focus on the potential role of child support in enabling single mothers to leave welfare and attain self-sufficiency. It also examines families' understanding of the child support system, the current status of child support receipt among welfare recipients, and the effects of welfare reforms on child support payments.
