This paper examines the relationship between fathers' contact with their children and their payment of formal child support.  After controlling for various variables, the author finds that fathers who see their children more regularly are actually less likely to pay formal child support.  She suggests that this is because many fathers who see their children make informal contributions to them in lieu of paying through the formal child support system.
