This paper argues that welfare reforms in the United States may be harming children because welfare-reliant mothers, who are now required to work, may face challenges to breastfeeding their infants. The authors discuss the health benefits of breastfeeding for infants and suggest that national rates of breastfeeding would be higher if the reforms had not been implemented. They suggest that these potentially negative consequences for children should be considered when weighing the benefits and drawbacks of welfare reforms.
