This paper examines changing patterns of dating, courtship and union formation in the United States and discusses factors that contribute to these changes.  It also discusses existing measures of the pathway to union formation and suggests that more knowledge is necessary about the types of relationships that lead to marriage or act as substitutes to marriage.  It also recommends further study of the characteristics of these alternative relationships and the level of commitment that exists in them.
