Using data from the Fragile Families Survey, this paper documents the number of romantic relationships unmarried mothers experience by the time their child is three years old.  It finds that levels of partnership instability are quite high, and that such instability has a negative effect on parenting ability, child health, and child behaviour.  The authors suggest that policies designed to promote relationship stability may improve child outcomes.
