Using data from the National Survey of America's Families, this paper explores the characteristics of cohabiting couples and the impact that this type of relationship has on child well-being. It looks at the income status and level of food security in cohabiting homes as compared to that in married couple families, and finds that marriage promotion efforts aimed towards cohabiting parents can improve outcomes for their children.
