This paper looks at unmarried parents' attitudes towards marriage and the likelihood that they will marry by the time their child is a year old.  It finds that most couples express positive attitudes towards marriage but few actually marry within the year.  It suggests that positive attitudes towards marriage may actually contribute to its postponement, as couples look at marriage as a sign that they have "arrived", and are therefore reluctant to marry until they have achieved certain life goals.
