This paper examines the effects of marriage and labour markets on the marriage rate among women aged 16 to 24 from 1970 to 1990.  It finds that strong female labour markets, poor male labour markets, and poor marriage markets all decrease the incidence of marriage among young women.  The authors also discuss differences between white and black women and the effect of welfare policies on marriage rates.
