This paper discusses the psychological effects of being a caregiver and how the individual's adjustment to caregiving affects marital discord. This paper finds that women caring for a biological parent and men caring for their spouse produce the highest levels of marital disagreement. Marital disagreement is associated with elevated rates of depression, lower levels of happiness, and lower ratings of personal mastery.
