Verbal/Symbolic Aggression in Couples: Incidence Rates and Relationships to Personal Characteristics

This article discusses the prevalence, duration, and causes of verbal and symbolic aggression between intimate partners.  It finds that women and men are equally likely to use these forms of aggression and that they occurs most frequently in situations in which there is drug and/or alcohol abuse.  Furthermore, it finds that these forms of aggression decrease as the age and number of children in the family increases.
