This research aims to discover potential strategies for reducing the adverse consequences of economic hardship on marriage.  In looking at 451 families in 1989 and following them over three years, the study found that marital empathy, and the ability to generate solutions were key factors in marriages that were able to reduce the effects of economic stress.
