This paper examines values and attitudes concerning the competing roles of marriage and work among young Egyptian working women.  It documents an increase in the average female marital age in Egypt, despite little or no improvement in labour market outcomes for women.  Based on interviews with numerous Egyptian women, the authors suggest that this trend is due to a desire by women to plan and prepare financially for marriage, in order to achieve a higher standard of living once married.
