This paper examines couple households in which the female partner in the primary breadwinner for the household.  It distinguishes between temporary and long-term female breadwinner households and finds that they differ significantly in demographic, socio-economic, labour market and family commitment characteristics.  Similarly significant differences seem to exist between couples in which female earning dominance is economically motivated and those in which the decision is part of an intentional strategy of gender equality.
