This article examines the delayed spread of cohabitation as a widely accepted form of union in Italy.  It provides evidence that cohabitation is now spreading in Italy, and highlights the important role that marriage plays in this country, even as cohabitation spreads throughout the rest of Europe.  The authors suggest that this delay is due to children's desire to avoid choices which would directly clash with their parents' values.
