This paper examines patterns of cohabitation in the United States, the characteristics of cohabiters, the quality and length of their relationships, and the relationship between cohabitation, marriage, and divorce.  Among other things, it finds that cohabiters are more likely to have lower education, a less stable relationship, and higher levels of breakup if they do eventually marry.
