This paper addresses the impact of divorce on different cultural communities, particularly Islamic and Jewish cultures. It assesses male dominance and the cultural tradition of being wedded to a woman by force. The paper further deals with the stresses of divorce on the couple. The authors conclude that to properly appreciate the context of each cultural-community, divorce law should consider a complex and contested set of religious, historical and legal principles and commentaries.
