This paper demonstrates that, compared to those who choose marriage, individuals who cohabit are less likely to value marriage and family, more likely to highly value career success, and more likely to believe that money and leisure time for personal pursuits are very important.  Cohabiters are also more likely to reject traditional gender roles within marriage and less likely to participate in religious activities.
