This paper analyses the effect that religious commitment has on people's risk of substance abuse.  It discusses ways in which religious beliefs and institutions can help to prevent substance abuse, and it demonstrates that religious leaders are in a powerful position to both prevent and treat this problem.  It also argues that clergy need better training in this field and that both religious leaders and medical professionals need a better awareness of the role that religion can play in this regard.
