This paper proposes a theoretical model of the relationship between cohabitation and marriage.  It hypothesizes that couples cohabit in order to evaluate their partner as a potential spouse.  After determining the suitability of their partner, the authors argue, individuals then make the decision to either marry or separate.  Cohabitation, then, is viewed as a trial period with lower levels of commitment and risk than marriage.
