This paper examines cohabitors' expectations of marriage and demonstrates that, for many people, cohabitation is seen as an alternative to marriage, rather than as a precursor to marriage.  It also discusses the characteristics of cohabitors, with an emphasis on their ethnicity and socio-economic status.  It finds that expectations of marriage among cohabitors are largely shaped by the male partner's socio-economic status.
