This paper demonstrates that, regardless of ethnicity, children in cohabiting unions experience greater instability than children born into married families.  It also shows that if cohabiting parents marry, there is no increase in stability for white or Hispanic children. Among black children, however, marriage after cohabitation is associated with increased family stability.
