This paper discusses the reliability of measures of cohabitation, the prevalence of part time cohabitation, and the extent to which characteristics commonly associated with cohabitation are affected by the measurement of part-time cohabiting arrangements.  It argues that the way in which part-time cohabitation is classified will have a significant impact on measures of the prevalence of cohabitation, particularly for black Americans, as well as its outcomes and the characteristics of cohabiters.
