Family Matters: The Role of the Family in Immigrants’ Destination Language Acquisition

This paper examines the effects of family relationships and composition on immigrants' development of proficiency in the language of their destination country.  Among other things, it finds that the presence of children negatively affects mothers language acquisition, but has no effect on fathers.  Furthermore, it finds a significant positive correlation between spouses in terms of language acquisition.
