This paper documents the exceptionally high rate of maternal mortality in Malawi, explores possible reasons for these rates, and discusses interventions that are necessary in order to improve maternal outcomes.  The authors highlight poor care, resricted access, health system flaw, and harmful practices as the primary contributors to high levels of maternal mortality.  They also recommend various system improvements.
