This article examines the psychological adjustment of older adults to widowhood in order to determine whether the loss is more difficult if it is sudden rather than anticipated. It finds that forewarning of death does not mediate the effects of such a loss, and prolonged forewarning is associated with increased anxiety for the surviving spouse.
