This paper demonstrates that elderly widows and widowers have significantly higher rates of poverty than elderly married couples.  It suggests that this is, in part, due to the amount of money spent on health care services for a dying spouse.  It shows that, particularly for low-income couples, these medical expenditures can constitute up to 70% of their income.
