This booklet reviews past research pertaining to the impact of family structure on child outcomes looking specifically at stepfamilies, single-parent homes, widowhood, and remarriage. It finds that family composition and disruption significantly affect children's physical and psychological health, educational achievement, and employment-related outcomes. Single-parent families are found to have the most detrimental impact on the overall well-being of children.
