This paper redefines the tradtional conceptions of stepfamily and stepparent by including cohabitating relationships as a subcategory of stepfamilies. Using this revised definition, it discusses the prevalence of stepparenting in the US, the multiplicity of parental obligations and socio-demographic characterisitcs of stepparents, and the implications of this more comprehensive definition for future stepfamily research.
